In enhanced mode, the string "a_b" is displayed as "a" followed by "b"
in subscript. Most of our analyses use underscore, so the fix is to
disable the enhanced mode.

The RunnableTester class is now a subclass of the Runnable that is being
tested. This simplifies overriding methods.

This guarantees that `substitution_in_progress` is correctly initialised
